Resumen

Este trabajo propone un acercamiento a la difusa figura de este prolífico artista estadounidense, creador de High Lights of History, la primera serie que trató de aprovechar las hasta entonces desconocidas posibilidades didácticas de la tira de prensa para acercar y transmitir el gusto por la Historia, tanto a niños como a adultos, de una manera diferente, amena y novedosa. High Lights of History llegó diariamente a millones de lectores entre 1924 y 1942, influyendo decisivamente en la aparición de otras series similares en forma y contenido que, sin embargo, no lograron alcanzar el éxito, la difusión o la desusada longevidad de la pionera creación de Mansfield. Recurriendo a fuentes bibliográficas, hemerográficas y de archivo, se ofrece aquí una documentada reconstrucción factual de su trayectoria vital que pretende servir de base inicial a futuras aportaciones.
