Imágenes borradas y letras cambiadas: el español en el paisaje lingüístico de Utica, NY

La población hispana de Utica, una ciudad pequeña en el centro del estado de Nueva York, ha crecido considerablemente en los últimos cincuenta años. Simultáneamente ha crecido el número de hispanohablantes y ha aumentado la visibilidad de la lengua española en el ámbito público. Este ensayo resume la presencia del español en los espacios públicos de Utica y luego describe dos anécdotas sobre el español en el paisaje lingüístico de la ciudad. Se borraron los símbolos en un caso; en el otro, se cambió una palabra. Este ensayo analiza estos dos episodios en la historia de la comunidad hispana de Utica y lo que significan respecto a la lengua e identidad de ese grupo.
