From Auto-flagellation to Communal Love: The Sex(y) Corazón of John Rechy and Hom(e)oerotics

John Rechy, el eterno outsider literario o "forajido", como él prefiere, ha proporcionado casi sesenta años de agudo análisis crítico a través de diversos medios escritos: artículos periodísticos, relatos cortos, ensayos, obras de teatro, memorias y la novela. A lo largo de su corpus de novelas, escribe sobre la «búsqueda de un sustituto de la salvación» por parte del protagonista, a medida que Rechy se descoloniza de las falsas promesas de la Iglesia católica. Tomo temas de varias de las novelas de Rechy para ampliar mi teoría de la hom(e)oerótica, un proceso para que los hombres queer Xicanx nos descolonicemos de la autoflagelación de la misoginia y la homofobia interiorizadas, sistemas que observamos y absorbemos de instituciones como la Iglesia, el Estado, la Familia. Las seis décadas de escritura de Rechy son alternativamente una lección de historia y un sombrío presagio, particularmente al documentar más de cuatro décadas de la pandemia del VIH/SIDA, un tema que poca gente considera un problema de importancia, particularmente en el campo de los estudios chicanos y chicanas.
